The front nine holes were originally designed by esteemed golf design architect Donald Ross in 1920 who was widely known for his trademark “turtleback” green design. The back nine followed in the early 70’s with the inspiration of Donald Ross’ original vision. A relatively short yardage of 6,100 feet from the blue tees it sounds like it would be a cakewalk getting around the course. It is anything but. To start, your drive on number one is over water for the men, not a hard shot, but that water always stares you down. The fourth, a downhill par 5 makes you decide if it is worth it to go for the water protected green on your second shot. The sixth hole is a 200 yard downhill par 3 with wind always a factor, and the ninth a ninety degree dogleg to a green again protected by water. As you head to the back nine, there is still some challenging golf to play. The tenth hole challenges your ability to drive it straight, while eleven and twelve let you spray it a little. Hole number sixteen is another long downhill par 3, set away in a beautiful, peaceful setting. Pick the right club or you could make a big number. The finishing eighteenth hole is the last par 3, 180 yards again downhill. Standing on that tee you get a view of the golf course, resort, and Crotched Mountain Ski Area. It is a great way to end your round. “I could play that hole over and over,” says Head PGA Professional Ken Hamel, “the views alone makes your trip to the golf course an enjoyable one, playing golf only adds to that.” After the round you can sit on the deck at Malarkey’s Restaurant and enjoy your favorite beverage and food. It is a favorite spot for members as they can see players playing the eighteenth hole and also watch players teeing off on number ten.
