Just south of Camden, Maine cradled between lush green hills and the blue waters of Penobscot Bay lies the Samoset Resort Hotel, a perfect retreat for a romantic getaway, family vacation or group outing. The course itself, built in 1902, is a ways magnificent, benefiting from the ocean mists and the loving care of a devoted staff. Some call it a Pebble Beach of the East, with a full seven holes playing alongside or across a piece of the ocean.
The course design uses elevation changes along the rocky coast to dare shots over crashing waves, or to persuade others to hug the well-grassed “inland” route to the hole. But anywhere on the course, you can feel the ocean’s presence.
The Samoset went through several renovations from 1999 – 2001, including the 4th, 5th, 12th, and 14th holes. These, along with the brand new 18th hole (now regarded as one of the toughest finishing holes in New England) were all designed by New England architect Bradley Booth. Samoset recently won the State of Maine Environmental Leader award.
Further down the coast in South Portland is Samoset’s sister course, Sable oaks Golf Club, a Cornish and Silva 1989 design.
Once again you find elegant golf holes, this time arrayed around a high piece of land off the water. You’ll be treated to some challenging but enjoyable golf, surrounded by woods and ponds, with soft fairways and gently rolling, manicured greens.
Enjoy wide, inviting fairways on a par 70, 6359-yard track. It sounds short, but the challenge lies in the playing to optimal positions. Water is in play on perhaps three holes, but wetlands everywhere require several carries for a drive or an approach. Relatively easy to walk, Sable has a private club feel but is eminently approachable, and most affordable. Just minutes from the Maine Turnpike and the Portland Airport, it’s easy to reach from anywhere.
