Try the Shaker Hills Experience
Ever since opening to national acclaim in 1991 (“Best New Public Course in the U.S.), Shaker Hills has been raising expectations about what upscale public golf can be.
From your first drive up the winding picturesque entrance to your final drive on the spectacular 18th fairway, everything about Shaker Hills says quality. Take a look at the new online photo tour to truly sense the pristine beauty of Shaker Hills.
The 6,850 yard 18-Hole par 71 layout, nestled among pines, stone outcroppings, and rolling landscape, features bentgrass throughout the course. Multiple tee positions on every hole provide an endless variety of attack angles and landing areas, making the course ideal for both experienced and beginner golfers.
Noted golf architects Brian Silva and Mark Mungeam (with considerable cooperation from the Creator) have fashioned a beautiful and unique golf course that's challenging yet fair.
Here are two examples of the Shaker Hills golf experience. One of the most beautiful and demanding holes in New England, No. 3 is one of the signature holes. This par 3 with a wide, shallow green offers an inviting target from an elevated, five-tier tee. Sand awaits long shots, and a small pond lurks to the left to snare off-line birdie-bids. Club selection can range from lofted woods to mid-irons.
And consider the unusual 18th. Your first chore is to carry your drive over a large waste area. Then you need to plan your next shot around an outcropping of ledge which splits the fairway. If you haven’t found the right landing spot, your might have a blind approach to the downhill green.
But what really sets Shaker Hills apart from other public courses is its "private club" atmosphere and amenities. The club specializes in hosting tournaments and fundraisers and providing the extra touches.
An ample pro shop can provide all the prizes you need, as well as expert club-fitting. Says PGA head pro Mike Herrick, “If every golfer were the same size and had the same swing, every golfer could use the same set of clubs. But studies show as many as 9 of 10 golfers are playing with clubs not perfectly matched to their needs. We can help them out.”
Put Shaker Hills on your list of the courses you really must see—or get back to—in 2009.
